Today, students began to look at sources of information and the various types of sources historians and social scientists work with when reconstructing the past. Specifically, students worked on differentiating between primary sources and secondary sources, and artifacts and fossils. For homework, students need to identify a variety of sources as either primary or secondary. I also want to inform you of some changes to the Chanute Air Museum Field Trip that was originally scheduled for September 12. Do to issues with buses, we will be taking my 1st period, 2nd period, and part of 7th period to the Museum on Wednesday, September 11 from 12:00 to 1:45, and the other part of 7th period, 8th period, and 9th period on Friday, September 13 from 12:00 to 1:45.
Today, students worked on applying their knowledge of absolute location to real life locations throughout the world. In groups, students competed to find the specific city when given the exact latitude and longitude, and then turned things around and had to find the exact latitude and longitude when given a specific city. Students were also given permission slips to take home and have signed over the weekend. These permission slips are for our trip to the Chanute Air Museum in Rantoul. Our field trip is Thursday, September 12, 2013, and students will be going to view a traveling exhibit about the Tuskegee Airmen. Students should also be working to complete their Classroom Gridmap Project, which is due on Mo
Today, students reviewed some of the key mapping skills they learned about from yesterday's lesson, which included concepts such as cardinal directions, intermediate directions, relative location, absolute location, longitude, and latitude. Students then received their mini-project, the Classroom Gridmap Assignment, which is due on Monday, September 9, 2013. Instructions for this project are under the Introduction to Social Studies link on my website. Students also turned in their Timeline Projects today, and many of them looked awesome. Please remember that tomorrow is our Fall Holiday, and there is no school. Enjoy the day off, and we will see everyone on Friday morning.
Today, I was out of the classroom to facilitate 6th grade social studies professional development for all middle school teachers. Students reviewed the various parts of a map with the sub today, and then viewed a short video that describe how maps are constructed, and why they are important. The information presented today will help them with their next mini project, the development of a Classroom Gridmap. There was no homework assigned today, but students should be prepared to turn in their Timeline Projects tomorrow!!!
Today we began our mini unit on map skills. Students became familiar with the various parts of a map, and where they are located on a map. During the course of the lesson, students then showed their understanding of the parts of the map by identifying them on a variety of different maps in the textbook. There was no homework assigned from today's lesson, but students should continue to work on their Timeline Projects that are due Wednesday, Sept.
