Students were also asked to go home tonight and ask what their parents (or anyone old enough to remember) what they remember about what they were doing when they first heard about the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Please share with your students what you remember about that day so that we can discuss those events tomorrow in class.

Today, students reviewed some of the key mapping skills they learned about from yesterday's lesson, which included concepts such as cardinal directions, intermediate directions, relative location, absolute location, longitude, and latitude. Students then received their mini-project, the Classroom Gridmap Assignment, which is due on Monday, September 9, 2013. Instructions for this project are under the Introduction to Social Studies link on my website. Students also turned in their Timeline Projects today, and many of them looked awesome. Please remember that tomorrow is our Fall Holiday, and there is no school. Enjoy the day off, and we will see everyone on Friday morning.
Today, I was out of the classroom to facilitate 6th grade social studies professional development for all middle school teachers. Students reviewed the various parts of a map with the sub today, and then viewed a short video that describe how maps are constructed, and why they are important. The information presented today will help them with their next mini project, the development of a Classroom Gridmap. There was no homework assigned today, but students should be prepared to turn in their Timeline Projects tomorrow!!!
Today we began our mini unit on map skills. Students became familiar with the various parts of a map, and where they are located on a map. During the course of the lesson, students then showed their understanding of the parts of the map by identifying them on a variety of different maps in the textbook. There was no homework assigned from today's lesson, but students should continue to work on their Timeline Projects that are due Wednesday, Sept.
Today, students learned about the 5 Themes of Geography: Location, Place, Human-Environmental Interaction, Movement, and Region. Tonight, students should be creating a brief essay that explains what the 5 Themes of Geography are in their own worlds.

They were then introduced to their next major project, the creation of a timeline of their lives. In this assignment, students will develop a timeline of 20 major events in their lives. This project will be due on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, and instructions can be found on the Introduction to Social Studies link on my website.
